Seppic Unveils Research on Biodegradable Emollients Amidst Upcoming Silicone Bans

Seppic Launches Emogreen Range: A Sustainable Alternative to Silicones in Beauty Formulations

Seppic Unveils Sustainable Emogreen Range Amid Regulatory Changes in Beauty Industry

In a significant move towards sustainability, Seppic has launched its Emogreen range, a collection of biodegradable and plant-based emollients designed to meet the evolving demands of beauty formulators. This announcement comes at a crucial time as regulatory shifts intensify pressure on the beauty industry to adopt eco-friendly solutions.

Lorraine Denois, Seppic’s cosmetic market and digital manager, shared insights with Personal Care Insights, highlighting the Emogreen data package as a response to three primary challenges faced by formulators: replicating the desirable ‘silicone feel’ of products, achieving optimal hair fiber performance, and ensuring chemical stability. “The Emogreen range’s stability and sensory versatility make it a premier plant-based alternative to silicones across the entire beauty spectrum, including sun care, skin care, and makeup formulations,” Denois stated.

The urgency for such innovations is underscored by impending EU restrictions on D4 and D5 silicones, which will ban D5 and D6 leave-on products starting June 2026. Denois noted that brands are increasingly concerned about losing the ‘instant slip’ and ‘softness’ that silicones provide without weighing hair down. Emogreen L15, for instance, serves as a non-greasy alternative to volatile silicone oils, offering a light finish that is less tacky than traditional dimethicone.

Historically, silicones were celebrated for their multiple benefits in beauty formulations. However, growing environmental concerns and negative consumer perceptions have led to a decline in their usage. Seppic’s Emogreen range stands out by addressing these issues. “Unlike synthetic silicones, which are often non-biodegradable and persistent in the environment, Emogreen is designed to replicate sensory profiles while being environmentally friendly,” Denois explained.

The Emogreen range offers targeted alternatives to specific silicones. For example, Emogreen L15 mimics low molecular weight Dimethicone while providing improved airiness and reduced greasiness. Similarly, Emogreen HP 40 delivers a shiny effect comparable to Phenyl Trimethicone, particularly beneficial for curly hair.

Another key advantage of the Emogreen range is its formulation stability. Denois emphasized that, unlike some natural oils that can be challenging to work with, Seppic’s bio-based alkanes maintain stability even in extreme pH conditions.

Seppic further distinguishes the Emogreen range through its certifications and data. The products are readily biodegradable according to OECD 301 standards, and their production process boasts a carbon footprint four times lower than that of silicone oils, achieving a negative carbon footprint when considering biogenic carbon. Additionally, the raw materials are 100% of natural origin, derived from renewable vegetable sources, and are ISCC Plus certified, ensuring traceability and adherence to social sustainability requirements.

As the beauty industry navigates a landscape increasingly focused on sustainability, Seppic’s Emogreen range emerges as a promising solution, marrying performance with environmental responsibility. With the regulatory landscape shifting, brands now have a viable path forward that aligns with consumer expectations and ecological considerations.
