Phelan’s battle to retain House Speaker position

Reelected Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan Faces Opposition from Within Party

In a heated primary runoff election, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan narrowly defeated opponent David Covey, securing his reelection to represent his southeast Texas district. However, Phelan’s victory was not without controversy as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton fought to remove him from his position.

Despite the challenges he faced, Phelan remains defiant and confident in his ability to lead. “As the speaker of the House, it will be the same Texas House that it’s been for many, many, many years,” Phelan stated. However, his opponent, Covey, believes that Phelan’s narrow victory sends a clear message to elected officials to govern conservatively.

Paxton, who still harbors resentment towards Phelan for voting to impeach him last year, has threatened that representatives who support Phelan as speaker in 2025 will not return. This has caused some House members, such as Dr. Tom Oliverson, to campaign for Phelan’s replacement as House speaker next legislative session.

Despite the challenges and opposition he faces, Phelan remains confident in his ability to retain his position. With no Democratic opponent in November, Phelan will now focus on garnering support from House members to secure his position as speaker for the upcoming session.

The political drama surrounding Phelan’s reelection highlights the ongoing power struggles within the Texas legislature and sets the stage for a contentious battle for leadership in the upcoming session.
