US National Security Adviser and General Zhang Youxia Clash Over Taiwan but Arrange Military Talks to Defuse Tensions

The United States national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, and Chinese General Zhang Youxia recently clashed over the issue of Taiwan during a high-stakes meeting in Beijing. Despite the tensions, the two officials managed to arrange military talks in an effort to defuse the situation.

Sullivan’s three-day trip to China was aimed at strengthening communication between the two superpowers on a range of issues. During the meeting, Zhang emphasized that Taiwan’s status was a “red line” that could not be crossed in China-US relations. He demanded that the US halt military collusion with Taiwan and cease arming the island nation.

In response, Sullivan raised concerns about stability in the Taiwan Strait and reiterated the US commitment to freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. The two officials also discussed China’s support for Russia’s defense industry and efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Despite the disagreements, both Sullivan and Zhang recognized the importance of maintaining open lines of communication. They agreed to arrange more direct military talks between commanders in the future to prevent further escalation of tensions.

This meeting comes at a crucial time as China is embroiled in security disputes with US allies Japan and the Philippines. Sullivan also met with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss calming tensions between the two countries ahead of the US presidential election.
