Keir Starmer Criticizes Israel’s Intent to Seize Gaza City

Sir Keir Starmer Condemns Israeli Plans for Gaza City Takeover

By Becky Morton, Political Reporter

In a bold statement that echoes growing international concern, Sir Keir Starmer has condemned Israel’s recent decision to escalate its military offensive in Gaza, labeling the plans to take over Gaza City as “wrong” and a catalyst for further bloodshed.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come in the wake of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet approving a plan to focus military efforts on Gaza City, the largest urban center in the enclave. Netanyahu has expressed intentions to control the entire Gaza Strip, but the current plan specifically targets the densely populated city, raising alarms among humanitarian organizations and families of hostages.

Starmer emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages. It will only bring more bloodshed.” He highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where hostages taken by Hamas are reportedly held under dire conditions.

The Labour leader called for an immediate ceasefire, a surge in humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages. “What we need is a diplomatic solution,” he insisted, urging both parties to step back from “the path of destruction.”

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey echoed Starmer’s sentiments, describing the plans as “utterly abhorrent” and suggesting that Netanyahu’s goal appears to be ethnic cleansing. He criticized the UK government for its inaction, urging an immediate halt to arms exports to Israel and sanctions against Netanyahu’s cabinet.

As tensions escalate, Foreign Secretary David Lammy is set to meet with US Vice President JD Vance at Chevening House, Kent, to discuss the ongoing crisis. The meeting comes amid a backdrop of the UK announcing plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes significant steps to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The United Nations has warned that a complete military takeover could lead to “catastrophic consequences” for both Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages. Currently, the Israeli military controls approximately three-quarters of Gaza, with most of its 2.1 million residents located in the remaining quarter.

Netanyahu’s office has outlined a five-point plan aimed at “defeating Hamas,” which includes disarming the group, returning hostages, and establishing a new civil administration in Gaza. However, critics argue that such military actions will only exacerbate the suffering of civilians and jeopardize the lives of hostages.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes peace and humanitarian needs over military escalation.
