Dan Ziskie, the talented actor known for his compelling portrayals in acclaimed series such as House of Cards and Treme, has passed away at the age of 80. His family confirmed that he died on July 21 in New York City due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. They described him as “a man of remarkable talent and a keen observer of life.”
Born in Detroit in 1944, Ziskie’s journey to stardom was anything but conventional. Before stepping into the limelight, he was a university athlete, a freighter crewman, and even dabbled in journalism. His acting career took flight at Chicago’s Second City, where he honed his skills alongside comedy legends like John Belushi. He later made his Broadway debut in 1980, appearing in productions such as Morning’s at Seven and I’m Not Rappaport.
Ziskie’s television career was marked by memorable roles that showcased his versatility. He played Vice President Jim Matthews in the early seasons of House of Cards, sharing the screen with stars like Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. The series, which ran from 2013 to 2017, garnered multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and nominations.
In addition to his role in House of Cards, Ziskie portrayed C.J. Liguori, a New Orleans banker, in HBO’s Treme, which aired from 2010 to 2013. His impressive resume also includes appearances in Law and Order, The Blacklist, Sex and the City, and Chappelle’s Show. On the big screen, he was featured in films such as The Jackal, War of the Worlds, and played NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue in the 2015 film Concussion.
Beyond acting, Ziskie was a passionate photographer. His work was published in major outlets, and he released a photo book titled Cloud Chamber in 2017.
He is survived by his brother David, sister-in-law Cynthia, and several nephews and their children. In a heartfelt statement, his family reflected on his vibrant spirit, saying, “Dan was a man of remarkable talent and a keen observer of life. He was as vibrant and multifaceted as the characters he portrayed on stage and screen.”
