Intimidation Tactics and Budget Scrutiny: The DeSantis Administration’s Assault on Local Governments in Florida

Florida’s Financial Audits Spark Controversy: A Retired Couple’s Encounter with Law Enforcement

Largo, FL — In a move that has raised eyebrows across the state, Blaise Ingoglia, a staunch ally of Governor Ron DeSantis, has initiated a series of audits targeting Democratic-run cities and counties in Florida. Ingoglia, appointed as the state’s chief financial officer, has vowed to root out what he describes as “excessively wasteful” spending. However, his approach has taken a troubling turn, as evidenced by a recent incident involving a retired couple in Largo.

On October 1, Ingoglia warned local governments to expect a “knock on the door” as part of his aggressive financial oversight. That knock came sooner than anticipated, but not in the way many expected. Two armed police officers, clad in bulletproof vests, arrived at the home of James O’Gara and his wife, demanding to know if they had sent a postcard that simply read, “You lack values.”

“It was designed to intimidate us,” O’Gara, a military veteran, recounted. He explained that the postcard was part of a peaceful protest campaign he had been conducting, aimed at various politicians. “I never imagined that sending a non-threatening card would lead to such an intimidating visit from law enforcement.”

The officers, according to O’Gara, were heavily armed and made small talk about his military service, which he found unsettling given the circumstances. “They used very little judgment,” he said, expressing disbelief that such resources were allocated for what he deemed a harmless expression of dissent.

In response to the incident, Sydney Booker, Ingoglia’s communications director, stated that the decision to conduct a threat assessment was made independently by law enforcement. “While it is unfortunate that this incident occurred, the chief financial officer trusts that law enforcement officials are taking necessary steps to protect public safety,” she said, emphasizing the importance of preserving First Amendment rights.

However, O’Gara dismissed the notion that the visit was justified for public safety, arguing it was a tactic to silence dissent. “It flatly doesn’t protect the politicians and it doesn’t protect the rights of citizens,” he asserted.

This incident is not isolated. Previous reports have surfaced of state officials dispatching law enforcement to private homes for seemingly trivial matters, raising concerns about the use of police resources in political disputes. Critics argue that these actions are part of a broader strategy by the DeSantis administration to intimidate opponents and consolidate power.

Ingoglia’s scrutiny of local budgets has also faced backlash. Officials in Broward County, Florida’s most Democratic region, have pushed back against his claims of $189 million in “excessive, wasteful spending.” They argue that his calculations are based on flawed data and ignore new state mandates that require additional funding.

“We wrote to him, we said: ‘Please show us where you got your starting point from,’” said Steven Geller, a Broward County commissioner. “He has not enlightened us.”

As Ingoglia continues to make sweeping allegations against various municipalities, analysts suggest that the motivations behind the Doge initiative are political rather than financial. Robert Jarvis, a law professor, noted that there is little evidence of wasteful spending at the local level. “Going after his enemies allows him to ignore how he has wasted money on things like Alligator Alcatraz and lawsuits against Disney,” he said.

As the DeSantis administration pushes forward with its agenda, the implications for local governance and civil liberties remain uncertain. With the 2024 elections on the horizon, the stakes are high, and the actions of state officials are drawing increasing scrutiny from both sides of the political aisle.
