The Rise of Small Luxury Products: Niche Perfumes and High-End Shampoos Thrive Amid Economic Challenges
Niche Perfumes and Luxury Shampoos Drive Growth Amid Economic Challenges
Seoul, South Korea – In a surprising twist amidst economic uncertainty, the allure of “small luxury” products is captivating consumers, as evidenced by a recent report from Shinsegae International. Sales of niche fragrances, high-end cosmetics, and premium shampoos have surged significantly this year, reflecting a shift in consumer behavior towards affordable indulgences.
Despite the ongoing economic recession, many shoppers are opting to splurge on smaller luxury items, seeking psychological satisfaction without the hefty price tags associated with traditional luxury goods like designer handbags and clothing. This trend has led to a remarkable increase in sales across various categories.
According to Shinsegae International, niche perfumes are particularly thriving, with brands like Diptyque and Santa Maria Novella continuing to dominate the market. However, newer entrants are also making waves. Notably, EXNIHILO, a Parisian niche fragrance brand founded in 2013, has reported an astonishing 120% increase in sales year-on-year. Their flagship scent, Blue Talisman Odd Perfume, has become a sensation, praised for its unique blend of Musk and Amber, and is currently priced at 400,000 won (approximately $300) for 100ml. The fragrance has gained popularity on social media, dubbed the “fatal scent of New Yorkers,” further driving its sales.

In addition to EXNIHILO, MEMO PARIS, another luxury niche brand, has seen its sales double annually. Known for its exquisite scents inspired by travel, MEMO’s offerings like “Inre de Perfume” and “Itak de Perfume” are capturing the imaginations of fragrance enthusiasts. The brand is set to release a limited edition in collaboration with renowned French artists next month, further enhancing its appeal.
Luxury cosmetics are also thriving, with DOLCE & GABBANA BEAUTY reporting a staggering 157% increase in sales this year. Their unique perfumes and makeup lines, particularly the iconic Light Blue fragrance, are resonating with consumers seeking a touch of glamour.
The trend extends to hair care, where the Italian brand Davines has experienced a 42% sales increase. Their flagship Energizing Shampoo, priced at 120,000 won (about $90) for 1,000ml, is a favorite among high-end salons and consumers alike, earning the nickname “Cheongdam-dong Shampoo.”
As an official from Shinsegae International noted, “The Lipstick Effect,” a phenomenon where consumers turn to smaller luxury items during economic downturns, is now expanding into various categories, including perfumes, cosmetics, and hair care. The company plans to continue introducing both established and emerging brands to the Korean market.
In a world where economic challenges persist, the rise of small luxury products offers a glimmer of hope and indulgence for consumers seeking to treat themselves without breaking the bank.
