Trump Threatens Tariffs on Countries with Digital Taxes Targeting U.S. Tech Firms

Trump Threatens Tariffs Over EU Digital Regulations

BRUSSELS (AP) — In a bold move signaling escalating tensions between the U.S. and Europe, President Donald Trump announced plans to impose new tariffs and export restrictions on countries implementing digital taxes or regulations that impact American technology firms.

During a post on Truth Social late Monday, Trump expressed his commitment to defending U.S. tech companies against what he termed discriminatory practices. “Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology,” he stated, without naming specific countries. However, his remarks were widely interpreted as a direct challenge to the European Union’s stringent digital regulations aimed at tech giants like Google, Apple, and Meta.

The EU has been actively pursuing regulations to rein in Big Tech, with its Digital Services Act aimed at cleaning up social media platforms and the Digital Markets Act designed to prevent monopolistic practices. These measures come with hefty fines for non-compliance, and several EU member states, including France, Italy, and Spain, have already enacted their own digital services taxes.

Trump’s comments come just a week after Washington and Brussels issued a joint statement pledging to address “unjustified digital trade barriers.” The president’s latest threats echo previous actions, such as when he pressured Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to abandon a proposed digital services tax.

In his statement, Trump also criticized the lack of similar regulations on Chinese tech companies, asserting, “This must end.” He warned that unless these “discriminatory actions” are revoked, he would impose “substantial additional Tariffs” on exports from offending nations and restrict the export of U.S. technology and chips.

The EU’s executive Commission responded firmly, asserting its sovereign right to regulate economic activities within its territory. Commission spokesperson Paulo Pinho emphasized that these regulations align with the EU’s democratic values.

As the global tech landscape continues to evolve, the implications of Trump’s threats could reverberate across international markets, raising concerns about potential trade wars and the future of digital commerce.

Stay tuned for updates as President Trump is set to hold a Cabinet meeting at 11 a.m. EDT, where further details on his administration’s stance may emerge.
