Roy McConnell was out for a morning walk with his daughter’s dog, Cheese, when he alleges that a pit bull named Bailey charged at them. “We were coming out of the house to go for the walk, and the dog just came out of nowhere,” McConnell recounted. This was not the first time Bailey had allegedly attacked Cheese, leaving the small dog with a serious leg injury from a previous encounter.

As the attack unfolded on the sidewalk, McConnell found himself in a desperate situation. “All this time, this dog has got my daughter’s dog in its jaws, and my daughter’s dog is behind me and he’s going to town on me because he’s in pure agony,” he said, describing the chaos of the moment. McConnell sustained bruises and cuts while trying to protect Cheese.

In a dramatic turn of events, McConnell said he felt compelled to act decisively. “I sprang into action and did what I thought I had to do. I dove on top of the dog,” he explained. He remained on top of Bailey until police arrived, determined to prevent any further harm. “There wasn’t going to be a strike three,” he added, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The owner of Bailey, Mykel Kelly, acknowledged that the pit bull had a history of aggression towards other dogs. “We are in the wrong for letting Bailey come out, but he’s also wrong for going ahead and killing it,” Kelly stated, highlighting the complexities of the incident.

McConnell maintains that his actions were necessary for the safety of his daughter’s pet. “I’m an animal lover like anyone else, and I didn’t want to do it. I did it because it had to be done,” he said, reflecting on the difficult choice he faced.
