NHC Monitoring Two Areas for Tropical Development, Including One Over Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Gulf Coast Storm Team is keeping a close eye on two areas in the tropics, as the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has identified a new region of interest over the Florida peninsula. This comes amid the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.
Earlier today, the NHC highlighted the potential for an area of low pressure to form near the northwestern Bahamas or even south Florida by Saturday. Currently, the odds of development are low, sitting at just 10% over the next week. However, meteorologists warn that even without significant development, residents can expect increased rain chances this weekend.
The disturbance, located east of Florida, is expected to drift northwest, potentially bringing unsettled weather and locally heavy rainfall to central and south Florida. This is particularly welcome news for areas like Fort Myers, which is currently facing a rainfall deficit of over 15 inches since the beginning of the year.
“While we’re not anticipating a major wind event, the moisture could help alleviate some of the dryness we’ve been experiencing,” said Chief Meteorologist Allyson Rae. “October typically brings rain, and this could be a good opportunity for us to catch up.”
In addition to the local disturbance, the NHC is also monitoring a tropical wave moving off the coast of Africa. This wave is expected to become the next area of interest for potential tropical development in the central Atlantic, with a current chance of 20% for it to develop into at least a tropical depression.
