With less than a week until Election Day, the race for New York City’s mayoral seat is heating up. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist from Queens, currently holds a 10-point lead over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll. However, Cuomo is rapidly closing the gap, raising the stakes for both candidates.

Mamdani, who made headlines in June by defeating Cuomo and eight other contenders to secure the Democratic nomination, now stands at 43% support among likely voters. Cuomo, running as an independent after resigning amid scandals in 2021, has garnered 33% support. The poll was conducted shortly after incumbent Mayor Eric Adams endorsed Cuomo in a bid to thwart Mamdani’s momentum.

Cuomo’s campaign is gaining traction, with his spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, declaring, “Make no mistake: The race is tightening, and Andrew Cuomo is closing in fast.” This sentiment is echoed by the latest Suffolk University poll, which also shows Mamdani’s lead shrinking from 13 points to 10.

The Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa, remains in the race with 14% support, while 6% of voters are undecided. Sliwa has faced pressure to withdraw from the race to create a direct contest between Mamdani and Cuomo, a move supported by influential figures like billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis.

As the campaign enters its final stretch, Cuomo has ramped up his criticisms of Mamdani, warning that a victory for the young candidate would lead to “mayhem” in the city. In response, Mamdani remains cautious, stating, “If you want to take something for granted, that’s what Andrew Cuomo did in the primary. We don’t want to end up like Andrew Cuomo.”

Mamdani’s campaign has focused on progressive policies aimed at addressing New York City’s affordability crisis. His proposals include eliminating bus fares, making City University of New York tuition-free, freezing rents on municipal housing, and establishing government-run grocery stores. His grassroots campaign has attracted support from prominent progressive figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Despite his popularity, Mamdani has faced criticism for his far-left proposals and past comments regarding the NYPD and Israel. As Election Day approaches, the outcome remains uncertain, with both candidates intensifying their efforts to sway undecided voters.

If elected, Mamdani would make history as the first Muslim and first Millennial mayor of New York City, a prospect that adds another layer of intrigue to this already contentious race.
