“We Care, Pink Hair: Avera Cancer Institute’s Initiative to Raise Awareness and Support for Cancer Patients”
Sioux Falls Initiative “We Care, Pink Hair” Returns to Raise Cancer Awareness
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Avera Cancer Institute is once again embracing the spirit of community and compassion with its annual “We Care, Pink Hair” initiative. This vibrant campaign invites participants to don pink or purple hair extensions, symbolizing support for breast cancer and general cancer awareness, respectively.
As October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the initiative aims to raise funds for essential programs, including the cancer navigation center and wig services, providing crucial support for families affected by cancer.
Melissa Carter, the gynecologic oncology clinic manager at Avera, shared her personal journey with breast cancer, which began in 2019. “It was an experience of ups and downs. But overall, the treatment was fantastic. I honestly cannot ask for a better provider team here at Avera. I have currently been five years cancer-free,” she said, highlighting the importance of community support in her recovery.
Carter emphasized that Avera goes beyond just physical treatment, offering emotional and spiritual support to patients. “Their programs really come in a circle with events like this. It looks at the patient as a person,” she explained. “You can have those extra supports from the pink care and awareness to our wig program and navigation support.”
The “We Care, Pink Hair” initiative is open to everyone in the community and will take place at three hair salons in Sioux Falls, as well as three Avera McKennan locations throughout October.
“This event brings awareness and is for all ages, which is the super fun part,” Carter noted. “It shows that you are supported not only by the people at the Avera Cancer Institute but also by the community.”
Participants can donate to receive their hair extensions, turning a simple fashion statement into a powerful message of hope and solidarity. From hair extensions to hope, this initiative aims to make a lasting impact on cancer patients and their families, reminding everyone of the importance of early detection and regular screenings.
As the community rallies together, the “We Care, Pink Hair” initiative stands as a testament to resilience, support, and the ongoing fight against cancer.
