Philadelphia Experiences Surge in Head Spas and Scalp Treatments

Insights from Dermatologists on Maintaining Scalp Health

What Dermatologists Say About Scalp Health

In a world where hair care often takes center stage, the health of our scalp is frequently overlooked. However, dermatologists emphasize that maintaining a healthy scalp is crucial for overall hair health. Dr. Michele Farber, a Philadelphia-based dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group, sheds light on common scalp conditions and the importance of proper care.

Conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and contact dermatitis are more prevalent than many realize. “While everyone experiences some normal hair shedding, there should be no thinning, patchiness, or excessive shedding in a healthy scalp,” Dr. Farber warns. These symptoms could indicate underlying hair loss conditions that require attention.

To promote scalp health, Dr. Farber suggests keeping the scalp clean and incorporating scalp massages to enhance circulation, which can support hair growth. “Head spas with knowledgeable specialists can be beneficial,” she notes, especially for those with dry or sensitive scalps. However, caution is advised. “Be wary of establishments that use excessive force or fail to tailor their products to individual scalp conditions, as this can exacerbate rashes, itching, or irritation.”

For persistent issues like rashes or hair loss, Dr. Farber recommends seeking medical treatment. “These symptoms may require prescription medication to fully resolve and could be signs of underlying health issues,” she explains.

Yoon, a head spa specialist, echoes Dr. Farber’s sentiments, emphasizing that treatments at head spas should complement, not replace, the care provided by board-certified dermatologists. “I’m pretty honest with my clients. Nobody has said, ‘Sonia, I thought you would make me grow hair,’” she shares. Instead, she focuses on educating her clients about the importance of combining spa treatments with prescribed therapies. “You can still use the prescription shampoo, but this is what you also have to do,” she advises.

As awareness of scalp health grows, it’s clear that a proactive approach—combining professional treatments with at-home care—can lead to healthier scalps and, ultimately, healthier hair. Whether you’re battling a specific condition or simply looking to enhance your scalp health, consulting with a dermatologist and seeking tailored treatments can make all the difference.
