Transforming Arizona Athletics: The Business Behind the Game
Tucson’s Arizona Sports Enterprises: A New Era in Collegiate Athletics
TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — The landscape of collegiate sports is evolving, and at the forefront of this transformation is Arizona Sports Enterprises (ASE), led by General Manager Brian Rooney. As part of our ongoing ‘Inside Arizona Athletics’ series, we delve into the innovative business strategies that are reshaping the University of Arizona’s athletic programs.
“We’re one of the first to bring our sponsorship division in-house,” Rooney stated, emphasizing a trend he believes is pivotal for the future of collegiate athletics. This strategic move allows the university to take control of its multimedia rights deals and operations, marking a significant shift in how college sports are managed.
Rooney, a Phoenix native with a rich background in sports, describes his return to Arizona as a “full-circle moment.” Having spent nearly two decades in professional sports, including a notable tenure with the Arizona Cardinals, he is now channeling his passion for athletics into building robust partnerships that benefit the university and its community.
“At some point, your athletic life comes to an end,” Rooney reflected with a smile. “I love sports. I’ve been involved in sports my whole life. I found a home on the business side.” His role at ASE is anything but monotonous; each day presents new challenges and opportunities. “We can find ourselves building and modeling and pitching the framework for a multimillion-dollar relationship with a Fortune 500 company, and an hour later we’re handing out popsicles to our football team,” he shared.
Central to Rooney’s vision is the idea of community. “We have an entire ecosystem that consists of multiple sports,” he explained, highlighting the importance of connecting alumni, donors, students, and, most importantly, the local community. This year, ASE partnered with the Dusk Music Festival to launch the ‘Bear Down Bash,’ a pregame tailgate that enhances the game-day experience for fans while introducing premium seating at Arizona Stadium.
Naming rights deals are another critical component of ASE’s strategy. Rooney acknowledges the sensitivity surrounding this topic but insists that finding brands and partners that align with the university’s values and traditions is essential for future success. “We’re looking for organizations that understand the honor and tradition that takes place here,” he said.
As Rooney and Athletic Director Desireé Reed-Francois work on these naming rights agreements, they anticipate a timeline of 6 to 18 months for completion. This careful approach underscores their commitment to preserving the integrity of the university while fostering growth and innovation.
With Rooney at the helm, Arizona Sports Enterprises is not just about business; it’s about building a legacy that honors the past while embracing the future of collegiate athletics. As the university continues to navigate this new chapter, one thing is clear: the Wildcat pride is alive and well, and it’s paving the way for exciting opportunities ahead.
