India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem: A Strategic Opportunity for Global Players

Global Players Eye India’s Semiconductor Landscape as Localisation Efforts Intensify

New Delhi, August 31 (ANI) — India’s burgeoning semiconductor ecosystem is drawing significant interest from global companies, eager to bridge the technological gaps and support the nation’s ambition of becoming a leading hub for chip manufacturing. As the country ramps up its efforts, industry executives highlight the growing trend of localisation in equipment manufacturing, research and development (R&D), workforce training, and infrastructure development.

The upcoming Semicon India 2025, scheduled from September 2-4 in New Delhi, is set to be a pivotal event, attracting participants from over 30 countries. This flagship gathering aims to foster global collaboration, bolster domestic innovation, and enhance India’s stature as a competitive electronics manufacturing destination.

Prominent international firms, including Applied Materials, IBM, Infineon, LAM Research, Merck, Siemens, TSMC, and Tata Electronics, are gearing up for the event, underscoring the strategic importance of India in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Anil Chaudhry, Head of Robotics & Solutions at Delta Electronics (India), emphasized the potential of the Indian market, citing government initiatives that include the establishment of ten semiconductor fabrication plants. He noted that the current reliance on imported high-speed precision machinery presents a unique opportunity for localisation.

“The technological gap in high-speed precision machinery is currently 100% dependent on imports. We are taking initial steps to localise production and aim to focus on ‘Make in India’ equipment that serves both the semiconductor and broader electronics markets,” Chaudhry stated.

Delta has committed USD 500 million to its Indian operations, with significant investments directed towards infrastructure, including land acquisition, test equipment, and factory expansions. The company specializes in providing comprehensive solutions across semiconductor fabrication and assembly-testing segments, leveraging advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency.

Chaudhry highlighted the competitive landscape, noting that Delta is not alone in its efforts, facing competition from Japanese, Korean, and Singaporean firms. “Semiconductor companies are seeking partners with established local expertise, which positions us advantageously in the Indian market,” he said.

Sanjeev Srivastava, Head of Industrial Automation at Delta, echoed this sentiment, stating that the company’s participation in Semicon India 2025 is driven by its extensive product offerings that align with the semiconductor industry’s needs. He pointed out that Delta’s robust presence in India, supported by fourteen regional offices and four manufacturing facilities, positions the company well for future growth.

As of now, the Indian government has approved ten semiconductor manufacturing projects with a cumulative investment exceeding Rs 1.60 lakh crore across six states, including Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. The first Made-in-India semiconductor chip is expected to roll out from Sanand’s CG plant by the end of this year, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s semiconductor journey.

With global players strengthening their foothold in India, the semiconductor landscape is poised for transformative growth, promising to reshape the electronics manufacturing sector and enhance India’s role in the global supply chain.
