Celebrating Curls: Shirin Zakerion’s Journey to Empower Natural Beauty at Siren Curl Studio
Celebrating Curls: Shirin Zakerion’s Journey to Empower Curly-Haired Individuals
Tulsa, OK — In a world where straight hair often dominates beauty standards, stylist Shirin Zakerion is on a mission to change the narrative. Since opening Siren Curl Studio in 2018, located at 7707 E. 111th St., Suite 105, Zakerion has created a sanctuary where curly hair is not just accepted but celebrated.
Growing up as an immigrant in Oklahoma, Zakerion faced the pressure to conform. “Blending in” often meant straightening her naturally curly hair, a struggle that many with textured hair can relate to. “I remember as a child, the extent of my curly hair care was going to get a relaxer,” she recalls. “That was what was sold to me as the solution to my hair.”
Her journey into the world of hair began at the Paul Mitchell School in Dallas in the early 2000s. After returning to Tulsa, she worked as a stylist for several years until the birth of her first child prompted her to step away from the chair in 2015. However, a transformative class in 2018 reignited her passion for curls.
“I didn’t expect to fall in love with the process,” Zakerion shares. “That feeling of seeing someone look in the mirror and finally recognize themselves — I knew that was something I wanted to be a part of.”
With newfound inspiration, Zakerion began to master techniques for caring for every curl type and pattern. She quickly realized that there was a significant gap in curly hair services and representation in her community. “If I wanted to help as many curly-haired people as possible in my lifetime, I couldn’t do it alone,” she says.
Thus, Siren Curl Studio was born, a place where every stylist is trained in the techniques Zakerion has perfected. “My work isn’t just about hair; it’s about teaching people, and even kids, how to care for their natural texture so they can embrace who they are,” she explains. “I want them to grow up never feeling like they have to change themselves to fit in.”
Zakerion’s vision extends beyond just styling; it’s about empowerment and self-acceptance. At Siren Curl Studio, clients are encouraged to embrace their natural beauty, fostering a community where curls are not just a hairstyle but a statement of identity.
As the studio continues to grow, Zakerion remains committed to her mission of representation and education, ensuring that every curly-haired individual who walks through her doors leaves feeling confident and celebrated. In a world that often pressures conformity, Zakerion is a beacon of hope for those who dare to embrace their natural selves.
