Consumer Reports Evaluates Hair Bonnets

Consumer Reports Explores the Essential Role of Hair Bonnets in Hair Care: Insights and Recommendations

Consumer Reports Week Highlights the Importance of Hair Bonnets

As Consumer Reports Week continues on the popular show “Live in the D,” the spotlight has turned to a nighttime essential for many households: the hair bonnet.

Ginger Cowles, managing editor at Consumer Reports, emphasized the significance of these often-overlooked accessories. “They’re a necessity,” Cowles stated. “So many people use them to maintain the health of their hair and also to preserve their hairstyle. You gotta have your bonnet on at night if you want to make your next day easier.”

This initiative follows the organization’s earlier investigation into synthetic braiding hair, which revealed alarming findings: all tested products contained carcinogens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with nine out of ten containing lead. As a result, Consumer Reports refrained from recommending any products in that category. The new bonnet testing aims to guide consumers toward healthier options.

In this round of testing, six Consumer Reports staffers evaluated approximately five bonnet products each, simulating real-life usage over multiple nights and washes. The team assessed both silk and satin options, with experts noting that silk is more breathable and helps maintain moisture balance, although it can be pricier. One standout silk bonnet was Blissey, priced around $60, which received high marks for its snug, turban-style fit, ideal for shorter hair or smaller head sizes.

Satin options also performed well, with Yanni’s Best emerging as a favorite for those with longer hair or anyone looking to preserve volume. Prince Hair Company, a small Etsy brand, won over testers with its reversible designs, although it was better suited for larger heads or textured hair. Hairbrella impressed with its adjustable, bra-strap-style band that stayed in place overnight, though it tended to flatten hair, making it a better choice for protective styles like braids or locs.

Consumer Reports maintains its commitment to unbiased testing, purchasing every product it evaluates with its own funds, including these bonnets.
