Photo Manipulation Sparks Controversy in North Texas Senate Race

AUSTIN — A manipulated image depicting Republican candidate Leigh Wambganss wearing an inverted cross—a symbol often associated with Satanism—has ignited a firestorm of controversy in the North Texas state Senate race. The incident raises pressing questions about the ease with which political campaigns can disseminate false information and the need for regulatory measures to combat such tactics.

Wambganss, a candidate for Senate District 9, took to social media to denounce the altered photo, which appeared on a website targeting her campaign. “Demonic!” she exclaimed, expressing her outrage over the attack. The situation escalated when Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a supporter of Wambganss, accused her opponent, John Huffman, of orchestrating the smear campaign.

“This attack by her opponent, John Huffman, is satanic,” Patrick declared on X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized the moral implications of the race, framing it as a battle between “darkness and light.”

Huffman’s campaign swiftly denied any involvement, with consultant Mitch Carney stating, “John Huffman had no involvement in creating the image in question, nor does he condone its use in any form.”

The controversy has drawn attention to a failed legislative effort earlier this year aimed at requiring political advertisements to disclose the use of manipulated media. House Bill 366, proposed by former Republican Speaker Dade Phelan, aimed to mandate transparency in political advertising, particularly regarding altered images, videos, or audio. Despite passing with bipartisan support in the House, the bill never received a hearing in the Senate.

Phelan, who faced his own share of misleading ads during the contentious 2023 primary, argued that voters deserve to know what is real and what is not. “All you have to do is disclose that you are lying to the public with your media,” he stated during the bill’s debate.

Political experts are increasingly concerned about the implications of advanced technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, which have made it easier than ever to create convincing disinformation. SMU political science professor Cal Jillson noted that while misleading political ads are not new, the tools available for creating them have dramatically improved.

University of Houston Political Scientist Brandon Rottinghaus warned that while some voters may discern reality from AI-generated fakes, others may fall prey to false images, especially when encountered through ideologically aligned sources. “There aren’t as many guardrails as there should be,” he said, emphasizing the urgent need for regulatory measures.

Phelan’s bill proposed making it a class-A misdemeanor to use faked media in political advertising without proper disclosure, a measure that faced opposition from some Republicans who argued it could stifle political satire.

In the case of Wambganss, the website that originally posted the manipulated image has since altered it to show her wearing a normal cross. The site, linked to the American Jobs and Growth PAC, has minimal information about its purpose, raising further questions about transparency in political funding.

Legal experts suggest that while outright bans on altered images may face constitutional challenges, disclosure requirements could stand up in court. “Labeling requirements—information disclosure requirements—are generally speaking an acceptable strategy,” said Dale Carpenter, a law professor at SMU.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the need for clear regulations on disinformation in political advertising has never been more critical. With voters increasingly exposed to manipulated media, the call for transparency and accountability in political campaigns is louder than ever.
