Dermatologists Call on Maha Medical Council to Address Unqualified Practitioners in Aesthetic Procedures

Urgent Call for Regulation: Doctors Demand Action Against Unqualified Aesthetic Procedures in Maharashtra

Nagpur Doctors Urge Maharashtra Medical Council to Tackle Unregulated Aesthetic Procedures

Nagpur: In a growing concern for public health, medical professionals in Maharashtra are sounding the alarm over the rising number of dermatological and aesthetic procedures being performed by unqualified individuals. A delegation from the Vidarbha Dermatological Society (VDS), led by President Dr. Asra Khumushi, recently met with Dr. Vinky Rughwani, the administrator of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), to address this alarming trend.

The VDS highlighted troubling instances where unauthorized treatments—including laser procedures, Botox injections, fillers, and chemical peels—are being conducted in non-medical establishments. These practices not only jeopardize patient safety but also undermine the integrity of the medical profession.

The delegation included a diverse group of dermatologists, such as Dr. Vikrant Saoji, Dr. Rizwan Haq, and Dr. Anshul Jain, who collectively voiced their concerns during the meeting. They urged the MMC to implement stricter regulations and enhance monitoring of these illegal practices, emphasizing the urgent need for public awareness.

Dr. Rughwani acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, assuring the delegation that the MMC is committed to taking action within the legal framework to combat these malpractices. He reiterated the council’s dedication to upholding ethical medical standards and protecting patients from unauthorized procedures.

In a bid to empower citizens, Dr. Rughwani also highlighted the ‘Know Your Doctor (KYD)’ initiative, which allows individuals to verify the registration and credentials of medical practitioners through the MMC’s official website.

This issue is not isolated to Maharashtra. In 2022, the Delhi High Court addressed similar concerns regarding medical malpractice in salons offering hair transplantation and aesthetic surgery. The court called for the establishment of national-level medical protocols to regulate these practices, emphasizing the need for oversight in an industry that is rapidly expanding.

As the demand for aesthetic procedures continues to rise, the call for stricter regulations and public awareness becomes increasingly critical. The VDS’s proactive approach serves as a reminder of the importance of qualified medical care in safeguarding public health.
