Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Premieres to Rapturous Ovation at Venice Film Festival

Venice, Italy — Guillermo del Toro’s long-cherished adaptation of Frankenstein made its world premiere on Saturday night at the Venice Film Festival, igniting a wave of excitement and emotion among festival-goers. As the credits rolled, the audience erupted into a stunning 14-minute standing ovation, leaving both del Toro and lead actor Jacob Elordi visibly moved to tears.

The premiere took place at the iconic Sala Grande on the Lido, where del Toro was joined by a star-studded cast including Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Felix Kammerer, along with composer Alexandre Desplat. The event attracted notable figures from the film industry, including Netflix executives Ted Sarandos and Dan Lin, as well as former Netflix film chief Scot Stuber, who produced the film. The red carpet was a dazzling affair, with appearances from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kaitlyn Dever, Jesse Williams, and Sofia Carson among others.

Del Toro, a veteran filmmaker known for his mastery of horror, expressed his lifelong passion for the project, stating, “This film concludes a quest that started at age 7, when I saw James Whale’s Frankenstein films for the first time. I felt the jolt of recognition in that seminal moment: Gothic horror became my church, and Boris Karloff my Messiah.”

Frankenstein reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic tale, focusing on the brilliant yet egotistical scientist Victor Frankenstein (played by Isaac) who creates a living being (Elordi) in a reckless experiment that ultimately leads to tragedy for both creator and creation.

The film is set for a limited theatrical release on October 17, followed by a global debut on Netflix on November 7. The 82nd edition of the Venice Film Festival runs from August 27 to September 6, showcasing a diverse array of cinematic talent and storytelling.
