Derek Dooley Enters U.S. Senate Race with Brian Kemp’s Backing

ATHENS, Ga. — In a significant political move, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has thrown his support behind Derek Dooley, the former University of Tennessee football coach, as he embarks on his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat in 2026. The endorsement, announced Saturday in Athens, positions Dooley as a key contender in a crowded Republican primary aiming to unseat incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff.

Dooley, the son of the late University of Georgia coaching legend Vince Dooley, is stepping into the political arena for the first time. In an exclusive interview with The Georgia Vote, he expressed his desire for “new leadership in the Senate” that prioritizes the needs of Georgians. “I spent a three-decade career probably doing the exact opposite of what a lot of the guys in D.C. were doing,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to serving the people over political agendas.

At 56, Dooley has a rich background in football, having recently worked as an analyst for Alabama’s program and previously coaching in the NFL with the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. His coaching tenure at Tennessee from 2010 to 2012 was marked by both challenges and triumphs, but now he aims to tackle the political landscape.

Hints of his political aspirations surfaced as early as June, when he remarked that Georgia “needs a political outsider in Washington — not another career politician.” This sentiment resonates with many voters seeking a break from traditional political norms.

Kemp’s endorsement carries weight, as he and Dooley share a personal history; the governor was a roommate of Dooley’s older brother at the University of Georgia and often visited the Dooley household during his youth. This connection may bolster Dooley’s appeal among voters who value local ties and authenticity.

As the Republican primary heats up, Dooley faces competition from notable candidates, including U.S. Congressmen Mike Collins and Buddy Carter. The political landscape shifted recently when state Insurance Commissioner John King exited the race, reportedly influenced by Kemp’s outreach to other GOP contenders.

With the 2026 election on the horizon, Dooley’s campaign is poised to capture the attention of both party loyalists and undecided voters. As he transitions from the football field to the political arena, all eyes will be on how he navigates the challenges ahead in his quest for the Senate seat.
