In a groundbreaking achievement, India has reached a significant milestone in its green energy journey, with 50% of its installed power capacity now sourced from non-fossil fuel sources—five years ahead of its 2030 target. This accomplishment underscores the nation’s commitment to sustainable growth and energy security under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
At a recent industry event, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the record levels of energy production in India, attributing the success to the diversification of energy sources. “India is producing more energy than ever before. With the rapidly growing demand, we have expanded our energy imports from 27 to 40 countries,” Puri stated, emphasizing the country’s strategic shift towards energy self-reliance.
The Indian government has made significant strides in broadening its energy supply base, incorporating biofuels, green hydrogen, and other renewable sources. Puri noted that the focus on green hydrogen is particularly noteworthy, with 862,000 tonnes of annual production capacity allocated to 19 companies, alongside the approval of 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity for 15 firms.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi celebrated this achievement, crediting Modi’s leadership for the accelerated green transformation. “In a world seeking climate solutions, India is showing the way,” Joshi remarked on social media, calling the early target achievement a proud moment for every Indian.
As of now, India’s total installed power capacity stands at 484.8 GW, with 242.8 GW—exactly 50%—derived from non-fossil fuel sources. This milestone was originally set under India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to be achieved by 2030, making the early accomplishment a testament to the nation’s proactive approach to renewable energy.
This significant leap not only positions India as a leader in the global green energy landscape but also reflects its commitment to combating climate change and fostering sustainable development. As the world looks for innovative solutions to environmental challenges, India’s progress serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through determination and strategic planning.
