Hollywood Unites in Protest Against ABC’s Suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Burbank, CA — A wave of anger and disbelief swept through Hollywood on Thursday as entertainment workers gathered outside Walt Disney Studios to protest ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! The decision followed controversial remarks made by Kimmel regarding the recent shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, igniting a firestorm of dissent among industry professionals and supporters alike.

The protest unfolded under the iconic Mickey-branded arch of the studio, where demonstrators filled the sidewalks with signs denouncing both the Trump administration and Disney for what they perceived as capitulation to political pressure. Messages such as “Shame on ABC!” and “You Can’t Please Tyrants” echoed the sentiments of those who believe that freedom of expression is under threat.

“It’s a First Amendment right. Our freedom of expression is fundamental. And last night ABC and Disney broke that,” declared Meredith Stiehm, president of the Writers Guild of America West, amidst the throng of protestors. “Everyone’s shocked and furious, and people want them to change that decision.”

Originally organized by the grassroots group “Burbank Against ICE,” the protest gained momentum when the Hollywood writers union urged its members to attend, resulting in a significant turnout of around 200 people, including members from SAG-AFTRA and the American Federation of Musicians.

Local politicians, including California State Assembly member Nick Schultz and Burbank City Council member Konstantine Anthony, also joined the protest, voicing their dissent against the corporate decision. Anthony, holding a sign referencing the Star Wars series, criticized Disney for failing to defend Kimmel against FCC chair Brendan Carr’s threats to revoke broadcast licenses.

The controversy erupted after Kimmel’s remarks on the Sept. 10 shooting, where he criticized the “MAGA gang” for attempting to distance themselves from the incident. Following Carr’s threats, ABC announced the indefinite suspension of Kimmel’s show, a move that many believe undermines free speech.

“They have a team of lawyers that can fight any sort of FCC crackdown, and yet they refused to,” Anthony stated. “They preempted any action by the Trump administration by suspending Jimmy Kimmel immediately.”

Protestors expressed concerns about the broader implications of ABC’s decision. Denise Pickering, a SAG-AFTRA member, emphasized the need for corporations to take a stand against political pressures, while fellow protestor Myles Warden warned of the chilling effect on free speech.

“I cannot believe what is currently happening to free speech,” echoed Chelsea Schwartz, another SAG-AFTRA member. “I just wish Disney stood up more to what’s currently happening.”

As the protest continued, the message was clear: the entertainment community is united in its demand for Kimmel’s return to the airwaves. “We want Jimmy Kimmel back on the air, and we will keep speaking up and putting pressure in any way we can until that happens,” Stiehm affirmed.

With tensions high and the stakes even higher, the future of late-night television—and the principles of free expression—hangs in the balance.
