OpenAI Shuts Down ChatGPT Accounts in Iranian Influence Operation

OpenAI recently uncovered a covert operation named Storm-2035, in which several ChatGPT accounts were used to spread disinformation as part of an Iranian influence campaign. The AI company reported that the operation generated content on various topics, including the U.S. presidential election, the conflict in Gaza, Israel’s presence at the Olympic Games, politics in Venezuela, and more.

However, before the content could gain a substantial audience, OpenAI took action and deactivated the accounts involved in the operation. The company also noted that the scheme included fashion and beauty content, possibly to appear more authentic or attract followers.

OpenAI emphasized its commitment to combating foreign influence operations, stating, “We take seriously any efforts to use our services in foreign influence operations.” In response to the incident, the company shared threat intelligence with government, campaign, and industry stakeholders to help disrupt such activities.

Despite the attempt to spread disinformation, OpenAI found no evidence that real people interacted with or widely shared the content generated by the operation. The social posts received minimal engagement, and there was no indication of the web articles being shared on social media. The Iranian operation was classified as a Category 2 on The Breakout Scale, indicating a low impact.

In light of these findings, OpenAI condemned any attempts to manipulate public opinion or influence political outcomes through deceptive means. The company pledged to enhance its AI technology to better detect and prevent abuse, working in collaboration with various partners to address such issues on a larger scale.

This incident follows similar foreign influence efforts reported by OpenAI earlier this year, involving AI tools based in Russia, China, Iran, and Israel. Despite these attempts, the disinformation campaigns failed to reach a significant audience, thanks to the company’s proactive measures.
