Live Updates: Current Developments on the Trump-Putin Meeting and Russia’s War in Ukraine

European Leaders Call for Further Talks Involving Ukraine Following Trump-Putin Discussions

European Leaders Call for Trilateral Talks Following Trump-Putin Meeting

Alaska — In a significant diplomatic development, European leaders have issued a joint statement advocating for further discussions involving U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This announcement follows a high-stakes meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, where the two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The European leaders emphasized the necessity of including Zelensky in future talks, underscoring the importance of a collaborative approach to achieving peace in the region. “Leaders welcomed President Trump’s efforts to stop the killing in Ukraine, end Russia’s war of aggression, and achieve just and lasting peace,” the statement read.

Interestingly, the joint statement did not address Trump’s recent calls for a “peace deal” as the most effective means to conclude the war in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, Trump suggested that a ceasefire might not be sustainable, marking a notable shift in his stance.

“It’s important to remember that there’s no deal until there’s a deal,” the statement quoted Trump, indicating that the next steps must involve direct discussions with Zelensky, whom Trump plans to meet soon.

European officials expressed their readiness to collaborate with both Trump and Zelensky to facilitate a trilateral summit, emphasizing the need for “ironclad security guarantees” for Ukraine. They firmly stated that “no limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or on its cooperation with third countries,” asserting that Russia should not have a veto over Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO.

The statement was jointly issued by several prominent European leaders, including:

  • Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission
  • Antonio Costa, President of the European Council
  • Emmanuel Macron, President of France
  • Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy
  • Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany
  • Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
  • Alexander Stubb, President of Finland
  • Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hoping that renewed dialogue can pave the way for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
