Celebrating Identity: The Annual Back to School BIPOC Hair Clinic at The Root Social Justice Center

Brattleboro’s Back to School BIPOC Hair Clinic Celebrates Community and Culture

BRATTLEBORO, VT – The Root Social Justice Center hosted its third annual Back to School BIPOC Hair Clinic on Saturday, August 30, 2025, welcoming families from across southern Vermont for a day of free, culturally competent hair care. The event aimed to empower Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students and their families as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

In a state where access to professional hair care tailored to diverse hair types can be limited, the clinic provided a vital service. “Black hair care in this area is so sparse, and when you can find it, it’s so expensive,” shared one participating stylist. “You often have to take an entire day off from work just to drive somewhere far away. This clinic makes it accessible for everyone.”

The event featured skilled stylists who volunteered their time and expertise, transforming the community space into a vibrant hub of creativity and connection. Attendees enjoyed not only haircuts and styles but also the warmth of a supportive environment where they could celebrate their identities.

Danien Mbombo, a local student, received a fresh haircut from Shenise Taliaferro, a stylist from Urban Styles in Keene. “I feel great! This is my first haircut of the school year, and I love it,” he exclaimed, beaming with confidence.

The Back to School BIPOC Hair Clinic is more than just a hair event; it serves as a BIPOC affinity space. It fosters an intentional and affirming environment where community members can gather, uplift one another, and build a stronger, safer community on their own terms.

The clinic operates at no cost to participants, thanks to the generosity of community donations. “We encourage those who can to contribute, ensuring that this event remains free and sustainable for years to come,” said a representative from The Root. Donations can be made at the event or online at www.therootsjc.org/donate.

As families left the clinic with new hairstyles and renewed spirits, the sense of community and belonging was palpable. The Back to School BIPOC Hair Clinic not only prepares students for the school year but also strengthens the bonds within the BIPOC community in Brattleboro.
