Migrant Captain Rackete Takes on New Political Journey

From Migrant Rescue Captain to Political Candidate: Carola Rackete Charts New Course in Politics

Carola Rackete, the hero who defied authorities to rescue migrants at sea, is now charting a new course in politics as a top candidate for the struggling German far-left party Die Linke in the upcoming EU elections.

Rackete, known for her daring rescue missions and environmental activism, has decided to enter politics out of necessity, citing the growing threat from the right-wing populist parties across Europe. With the 2024 European Parliament elections projected to see a major shift to the right, Rackete believes it is crucial for people to get involved politically to protect democracy.

Having a background in nautical science and maritime transport, Rackete began her career as a navigation officer on scientific expeditions before transitioning to environmental work and volunteering in migrant rescue missions. She gained international attention in 2019 when she forcibly docked the Sea-Watch 3 vessel with migrants on board on the island of Lampedusa, despite being refused permission.

Despite her environmental credentials, Rackete chose to align with Die Linke instead of the Greens, emphasizing the party’s rejection of corporate donations and criticism of capitalism and perpetual growth. Die Linke, rooted in both East German communism and the West German labor movement, has faced internal strife and is projected to win only three percent of the vote in the upcoming election.

However, as the number two candidate on the party list, Rackete is likely to secure a seat in the EU parliament. She sees the current crisis within Die Linke as an opportunity for change and aims to mobilize against the far right, emphasizing the need for a left-wing critique of the political mainstream.

At a rally in Berlin to launch Die Linke’s election campaign, Rackete expressed her determination to fight against the climate crisis and rising fascism, calling for anti-fascist resistance. With her background in activism and her commitment to social and environmental justice, Rackete’s entry into politics marks a new chapter in her journey as a champion for human rights and progressive values.
