Milei’s Party Defeated in Argentine Local Elections

Political Setback for Javier Milei in Buenos Aires Provincial Election

Setback for Milei: Libertarian Party Faces Major Defeat in Buenos Aires Election

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — In a significant political blow, Argentine President Javier Milei’s libertarian party, La Libertad Avanza, suffered a resounding defeat in the Buenos Aires provincial elections on Sunday. The results, which saw Milei’s party garner only 34% of the vote compared to the left-leaning Peronist opposition’s 47%, have raised alarms ahead of crucial congressional midterms next month.

Addressing his supporters at the party headquarters, a visibly chastened Milei acknowledged the defeat as a “clear setback.” He emphasized the need for introspection, stating, “If we’ve made political mistakes, we’re going to internalize them, we’re going to process them, we’re going to modify our actions.” Despite the loss, he reaffirmed his commitment to his sweeping economic reforms, declaring, “There will be no retreat in government policy.”

A Political Test for Milei

The election results are particularly concerning for Milei, who is grappling with a faltering economy and a graft scandal involving close associates. Analysts had anticipated a tighter race, but the 13-point loss in Buenos Aires province—home to nearly 40% of Argentina’s population—could embolden his political rivals at a critical juncture.

Former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, a prominent figure in the Peronist movement, took to social media to mock Milei’s defeat, suggesting it was a reckoning for his administration. “Did you see that, Milei?” she wrote. “Get out of your bubble, brother. … Things are getting heavy.”

Stakes Raised for Upcoming Midterms

With congressional midterms approaching, Milei faces mounting pressure to expand his party’s limited representation in an opposition-dominated Congress. The Peronists currently hold the largest bloc and have leveraged their numbers to pass social spending measures that challenge Milei’s budget-balancing efforts.

Political analyst Juan Cruz Díaz remarked, “This result is a key data point to understand the social mood and the level of support for the government in Argentina’s most important electoral district.” He added that while not the main national election, it serves as a wake-up call for Milei’s administration.

Economic Challenges Persist

Despite recent efforts to curb Argentina’s triple-digit inflation and end the reckless spending of previous administrations, many citizens have yet to feel the benefits of Milei’s austerity measures. His government has lifted currency restrictions as part of a $20 billion International Monetary Fund bailout, but investor confidence remains shaky.

Ana Iparraguirre, a political analyst, noted, “Milei has a very strong ideology, but that hasn’t materialized yet.” As consumer confidence wanes and unemployment rises, the government’s interventions to stabilize the peso have only added to the economic strain faced by everyday Argentines.

Peronists Celebrate a Resounding Victory

In stark contrast, the Peronist party celebrated its victory with fervor. Cristina Fernández, currently under house arrest, waved to jubilant crowds from her balcony, reinforcing her status as a key figure in the movement. She criticized Milei’s leadership, suggesting that the bribery scandal involving his sister would have dire electoral consequences.

Axel Kicillof, the left-wing governor of Buenos Aires province and a vocal critic of Milei, delivered an impassioned speech, reminding voters of the essential services that have been jeopardized under Milei’s administration. “The ballot boxes told Milei that public works cannot be halted,” he declared, as supporters cheered in agreement.

As Argentina braces for the upcoming midterms, the political landscape remains uncertain, with Milei’s administration facing significant challenges both from within and outside its ranks. The outcome of this election serves as a critical indicator of the shifting tides in Argentine politics, leaving many to wonder how the libertarian leader will navigate the turbulent waters ahead.
