Pennsylvania Republicans abandon officers who defended Capitol on Jan. 6

State GOP lawmakers jeer former U.S. Capitol officers defended against rioters

Former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and former sergeant Aquilino Gonell, who bravely defended the Capitol from rioters during the Jan. 6 insurrection, faced jeers and boos from state GOP lawmakers in Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives. The chaotic scene unfolded as House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D) introduced the two men as “heroes” for their actions on that fateful day.

Despite both officers being injured by rioters on Jan. 6, several Republican lawmakers reportedly hissed and walked out of the chamber in protest as Dunn and Gonell were honored. The incident highlights the deep political divide surrounding the legacy of the insurrection, with some lawmakers viewing support for law enforcement officers as politically contentious.

Both Dunn and Gonell, who are touring Pennsylvania to campaign for President Biden’s reelection, have been vocal about their experiences. Dunn, who was pepper-sprayed and injured during the insurrection, has launched a PAC to support anti-Trump candidates, emphasizing the importance of democracy. Gonell, an Iraq War veteran, accused Pennsylvania House Republicans of abandoning the truth and siding with those who attacked them.

Democratic lawmakers condemned the disrespectful behavior of their Republican counterparts, with House Speaker McClinton describing it as “despicable.” Rep. Jordan A. Harris emphasized that regardless of politics, the officers deserve respect for putting their lives on the line to defend democracy.

The incident underscores the ongoing polarization in American politics and the challenges faced by those who risked their lives to protect the Capitol and its occupants. Despite the divisive reactions, Dunn and Gonell continue to advocate for truth and democracy in the face of adversity.
