Breaking News: Massive Fire Engulfs Pittsburgh Apartment in Squirrel Hill, Emergency Demolition Ordered

Pittsburgh Apartment Condemned After Hours-Long Battle Against Flames in Squirrel Hill

PITTSBURGH — A massive fire engulfed the Jefferson Apartments in Squirrel Hill on Tuesday morning, leading to an emergency demolition order as firefighters battled the blaze for hours. The fire, which was first reported around 8 a.m., escalated quickly, prompting a response that reached four alarms.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the building on Forward Avenue, with flames visible from the Parkway East. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the age of the structure, which contributed to the extensive damage. By 1 p.m., the fire was declared under control, but not before the roof collapsed and the building was deemed uninhabitable.

Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones confirmed that all 30 residents were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported among tenants or firefighters. “It was a chaotic scene, but thankfully everyone got out,” Jones stated. “The building has suffered catastrophic damage.”

The fire reportedly started on the third floor, with an electrical fire in the basement complicating the situation. Firefighters worked tirelessly, with 73 personnel on the scene, battling the flames from multiple angles, including neighboring structures.

One resident’s caretaker expressed deep concern for a pet cat named Jelly, left behind during the evacuation. “I hope she’s okay,” he said, visibly shaken. “I just don’t want it to be my fault.”

As the fire raged, smoke enveloped the area, forcing nearby residents to close windows and stay indoors. Local traffic was heavily impacted, with the ramp from Forward Avenue to the Parkway East westbound closed due to the emergency response.

The aftermath of the fire left many residents in disbelief, as they processed the loss of their homes and belongings. “It’s a real tragedy,” one neighbor remarked. “Everyone in that building has lost everything.”

As the community comes to terms with this devastating event, local officials are coordinating support for those displaced. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with building inspectors set to discuss the future of the condemned structure.
