Potential Flooding Expected in Some Areas on Thursday

Flooding Alert: Heavy Rain and Storms Expected Thursday Evening

Prepare for Impact on Your Commute Due to Scattered Storms and Lightning

Flooding Possible for Parts of the Area Thursday

Scattered storms bringing heavy rain and lightning will impact the evening commute.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Residents of the Gulf Coast should brace for a potentially tumultuous Thursday as slow-moving storms are expected to bring heavy rain and lightning, particularly during the evening commute. The National Weather Service has declared today a Gulf Coast Weather Impact Day, urging locals to prepare for possible flooding.

Meteorologists attribute the increased rain chances to a stalled weather boundary that is currently hovering over the region. As this boundary gradually drifts southward into the weekend, drier air is anticipated to filter in, reducing storm chances significantly.

“Tonight, we could see some intense downpours, especially along the coast,” warned Chief Meteorologist Allyson Rae. “Drivers should allow extra time for their commutes, as heavy rain could lead to ponding on the roads and minor flooding.”

The storms are expected to peak during the evening rush hour, with rainfall rates potentially reaching one to two inches in some areas. While the storms may bring strong winds and lightning, the primary concern remains the risk of flooding due to the saturated ground from previous rainfall this week.

Looking ahead, the weekend forecast appears more promising. High temperatures are expected to hover around 90 degrees, with morning lows dipping into the low 70s. While isolated showers may still occur, the overall storm coverage will be significantly lower, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor plans without the threat of rain.

In addition to local weather concerns, a tropical wave is set to emerge into the eastern Atlantic basin on Friday. However, meteorologists report that it has a low chance of developing into a significant storm over the next week.

As the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared. For the latest updates, follow Gulf Coast News online and on air for the most accurate weather forecasts.

Stay safe and plan accordingly as we navigate through this weather impact day!
