Incident at Charleston Airport: Rep. Nancy Mace’s Altercation with Police Officers
Title: Tensions Rise as Rep. Nancy Mace Berates Airport Police in Charleston
Charleston, SC — U.S. Representative Nancy Mace found herself at the center of controversy Thursday morning after allegedly berating police officers at Charleston International Airport. According to an incident report, Mace was seen “loudly cursing” at officers, accusing them of being “f**king incompetent” during a heated exchange.
The incident unfolded as Mace, who is currently campaigning for governor of South Carolina and is known for her close alignment with former President Donald Trump, expressed frustration over her treatment at the airport. This is not the first time Mace has raised concerns about her safety; she previously reported being “physically accosted” on Capitol grounds last December.
One officer involved in the incident remarked, “Any other person in the airport acting and talking the way she did, our department would have dispatched and we would have addressed the behavior.” This comment underscores the unusual nature of the confrontation, given Mace’s status as a sitting congresswoman.
Mace’s Director of Operations, Cameron Morabito, defended her actions, suggesting that the media scrutiny surrounding her airport visit was unwarranted. “Apparently, simply arriving at an airport now makes headlines if you’re leading the race for governor,” he told The New York Times. He further emphasized the seriousness of Mace’s safety concerns, referencing recent threats against her, including those following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
In a brief statement to the Times, Mace acknowledged her frustrations, saying, “We all get frustrated when it’s not taken seriously.” She had been scheduled for an escort from the curb to her flight due to heightened security measures, but delays in her arrival reportedly contributed to her agitation.
According to the police report, Mace arrived at the airport around 6:50 a.m. in a dark gray sedan, rather than the expected white BMW. Officers had been informed she was running late, and upon meeting her, they described her as “very irate.” The report detailed her complaints, including a comparison to how other officials, such as U.S. Senator Tim Scott, would be treated.
As the officers escorted her to the gate, Mace allegedly continued to express her displeasure, cursing both at the officers and into her phone. Witnesses, including airline employees and TSA agents, later expressed shock at her behavior.
The incident has sparked discussions about the treatment of public officials and the expectations of conduct in public spaces. As Mace continues her campaign for governor, this episode may have lasting implications for her public image and political future.
Airport officials have declined to comment further on the incident, leaving many questions unanswered as the story develops.
