San Francisco Supervisor Joel Engardio Concedes in Recall Election
San Francisco, CA — In a surprising turn of events, San Francisco District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio conceded defeat in the recall election held on Tuesday, as preliminary results indicated a significant majority of voters favored his removal from office.
Engardio, who has served as a city supervisor since 2021, acknowledged the election results in a heartfelt statement, saying, “My time as a city supervisor will be shorter than expected. I accept the election results. But we can still celebrate. We are on the right side of history.” His remarks reflect a commitment to the initiatives he championed during his tenure, particularly the popular Sunset Dunes park project.
As of the latest update, approximately 15,468 mail-in ballots had been counted, with 9,969 votes—about 65%—supporting the recall. The turnout for this special election was nearly 31%, a notable figure for a local election.
Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed gratitude for Engardio’s service, stating, “I want to thank Supervisor Joel Engardio for his years of service and commitment to San Francisco. And I want to thank all the District Four residents who made their voices heard and participated in today’s special election.” He added that the city is currently evaluating the next steps for filling the District Four supervisor seat.
The Friends of Sunset Dunes, a local advocacy group, also weighed in, praising Engardio’s efforts. “Joel Engardio had the courage to let San Franciscans decide the future of their coast. Sunset Dunes is already one of the city’s most popular parks, bringing joy to tens of thousands of people every week,” they stated. They emphasized that more voters in District 4 supported the park initiative than those who voted for the recall, indicating a strong community backing for the project.
As the city prepares for the transition, many are left wondering what the future holds for District 4 and its ongoing projects. The election results will be officially certified in the coming weeks, paving the way for new leadership in the district.
