Scottish Salmon Trade Body Publishes Manifesto Ahead of General Election

The trade body for Scottish salmon, the UK’s largest food export, has released a manifesto outlining key asks for the next government ahead of the general election. Salmon Scotland has shared its detailed recommendations with all major political parties, emphasizing the need for a more enlightened approach to labor movement into the UK.

One of the main priorities for salmon farmers is a revision of key worker definitions and a public signal that the UK is open to welcoming workers from abroad. Additionally, the sector is calling for improved relations with the EU, focusing on reducing red tape for export businesses on both sides of the English Channel.

Salmon Scotland is urging the next UK government to implement electronic export health certificates to streamline the process of exporting salmon to Europe, which currently costs farmers an estimated £3 million annually post-Brexit. The trade body also highlights the importance of addressing Scotland’s housing crisis, particularly in rural and coastal communities where affordable accommodation is scarce.

Tavish Scott, chief executive of Salmon Scotland, emphasized the importance of supporting the Scottish salmon sector, which plays a significant role in the country’s economy. He called on all parties to prioritize policies that will enable responsible growth in the industry and strengthen collaboration between the UK and Scottish governments.
