Investigation Underway After Assassination of Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk
Charlie Kirk Assassinated in Daylight Shooting at Utah University; Shooter Still at Large
OREM, Utah (AP) — In a shocking act of political violence, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. More than 24 hours later, the shooter remains at large, prompting federal investigators to release photos of a suspect and offer a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Kirk, co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was addressing a crowd when a single shot rang out, striking him in the neck. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos as attendees screamed and fled the area. Videos of the incident quickly spread across social media, capturing the harrowing moment.
The shooter, who reportedly fired from a rooftop, blended into the crowd, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify them. Investigators have recovered a Mauser .30-caliber rifle and several clues, including a palm print and a shoe impression, but have yet to name a suspect or establish a motive.
“This was a targeted event,” stated Robert Bohls, the FBI’s top agent in Salt Lake City. The investigation has led to the release of two individuals taken into custody shortly after the shooting, as officials pursue new leads on a separate person of interest.
Kirk’s death has sparked widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. Former President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, announced plans to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his wife visited Kirk’s family, expressing their condolences and reflecting on their long-standing friendship.
As the investigation continues, the university community remains on edge. Kathleen Murphy, a local resident, expressed her fears, stating, “With the shooter not being caught yet, it was a worry.”
The attack has reignited discussions about political violence in the U.S., with leaders from both parties calling for unity and an end to such acts. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived a shooting in 2011, shared her heartbreak over Kirk’s murder, extending her sympathies to his family.
Kirk’s body is set to be flown to Arizona, where his nonprofit organization is based. Details regarding his funeral have yet to be announced, but Trump has indicated he plans to attend.
As the community mourns, the search for the shooter intensifies, with law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing, as the nation grapples with the implications of this tragic event.
