Prosecutor Details Tragic Ambush of Pennsylvania Police Officers by Stalking Suspect

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — In a harrowing incident that has left the community in shock, a suspected stalker ambushed police officers responding to a domestic violence call, resulting in the deaths of three officers and leaving two others critically injured. The tragic events unfolded on Wednesday afternoon in the rural area of North Codorus, Pennsylvania.

York County District Attorney Tim Barker held a press conference to provide details about the incident, identifying the suspect as 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth. According to Barker, the situation escalated when officers arrived at Ruth’s ex-girlfriend’s home, where he had been spotted lurking with a rifle.

At approximately 2:10 PM, officers discovered the front door of the residence unlocked, despite it being secured earlier by the ex-girlfriend and her mother. As they entered, Ruth opened fire with an AR-15 rifle equipped with a suppressor, striking four officers. Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, and Detective Mark Baker were killed in the ambush, while another officer and a deputy sheriff were critically injured.

“This is one of the most difficult things any of us have ever had to face,” Barker said, expressing his condolences to the families of the fallen officers. “We ask our community to keep these officers, their families, and their colleagues in your thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable grief.”

The incident began late Tuesday night when the ex-girlfriend reported seeing Ruth on her property using binoculars. She had previously suspected him of setting her car on fire in August. Officers attempted to locate Ruth that night but were unsuccessful, leading them to return the following day with warrants for his arrest.

As the investigation continues, authorities have emphasized the need for community support and awareness regarding domestic violence. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated, “We need to do better as a society. We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun is the answer to resolving disputes.”

In the wake of the tragedy, neighboring police departments have stepped in to assist, and community members have shown their support by holding vigils and leaving flowers at the officers’ headquarters. The loss of these dedicated officers has resonated deeply within the community, marking one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in Pennsylvania in recent years.
