Former British Politician Nathan Gill Sentenced to Over 10 Years for Bribery Linked to Pro-Russian Statements
LONDON (AP) — In a stunning fall from grace, Nathan Gill, a former British politician and ex-ally of Reform U.K. leader Nigel Farage, has been sentenced to ten and a half years in prison for accepting bribes to promote pro-Russian narratives in the European Parliament. The sentencing, delivered at London’s Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, marks a significant moment in the ongoing scrutiny of political integrity in the UK.
Gill, 52, pleaded guilty earlier this year to eight counts of bribery, admitting to receiving at least £40,000 (approximately $53,000) between December 2018 and July 2019. Prosecutors revealed that he was recruited by Oleg Voloshyn, a former pro-Russian Ukrainian politician, to make favorable statements about Russia and its actions in Ukraine. This included contributions to news outlets such as 112 Ukraine.
Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, who presided over the case, condemned Gill’s actions, stating that he had allowed financial incentives to “corrupt his moral compass.” She emphasized the importance of honesty and integrity in public office, declaring, “When you say what someone has paid you to say, you are not speaking with sincerity.”
Gill’s downfall began in September 2021 when he was stopped at Manchester Airport while attempting to travel to Russia. Following an investigation, his mobile phone was examined, revealing coded messages exchanged with Voloshyn that hinted at their financial dealings and connections with other members of the European Parliament.
Once a prominent figure in British politics, Gill was first elected to the European Parliament in 2014 as a member of the anti-EU U.K. Independence Party, later transitioning to the Brexit Party. He led the Welsh branch of Reform U.K. during the 2021 elections but has since distanced himself from the party, which is currently leading in opinion polls.
In a statement following the sentencing, Reform U.K. described Gill’s actions as “reprehensible, treasonous and unforgivable,” expressing satisfaction that justice had been served. Meanwhile, Voloshyn, who is believed to be residing in Russia, remains a fugitive, wanted by authorities in both Britain and Ukraine.
As the ramifications of Gill’s actions reverberate through the political landscape, this case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for corruption in politics and the importance of accountability among elected officials.
