Pro-Palestinian Delegates Sidelined at Democratic National Convention, Harris Reaffirms Support for Israel

Chicago — Hundreds of pro-Palestinian delegates were sidelined at the Democratic National Convention, which concluded with Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirming her support for Israel.

In her speech accepting the party’s presidential nomination, Harris stated, “The people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on October 7.”

As anti-war protesters filled the streets throughout the week, 270 pro-Palestinian Democrats, known as “cease-fire delegates,” signed a petition demanding Harris, if elected, to enact an arms embargo on Israel. The petition was pushed by leaders of the “Uncommitted” movement, which gained significant support in Democratic primaries across the nation.

Despite their efforts, the petition was unheeded, and the DNC denied a speaking request for Tanya Haj-Hassan, a pediatric doctor who treats wounded children in Gaza. The DNC reportedly did not want Harris to be overshadowed.

The pro-Palestinian group staged a sit-in outside the convention venue to protest the DNC’s decision. While they were given a speaking opportunity in a panel event outside of the convention, their voices were not prominently featured during the main proceedings.

The party’s platform, adopted at the convention, reaffirmed support for Israel, a cease-fire for a hostage release deal, and the two-state solution. Pro-Palestinian delegates attempted to include language supporting the enforcement of laws banning military aid to individuals or security forces that commit human rights violations.

Despite Harris expressing sympathy for Palestinian suffering, she signaled continuity with the current administration’s policies towards Israel. Her aides have stated that her stance on Israel is unlikely to diverge from President Joe Biden’s.

The Uncommitted delegates remain undeterred, with plans to continue advocating for their cause within the Democratic Party. They believe that revolutionizing the party and listening to its core base is the way forward.

As the debate over support for Israel within the Democratic Party continues, the pro-Palestinian delegates are determined to turn their protests into a political agenda. While their efforts may not yield immediate results, they are committed to the long game of effecting change within the party.
