BEND, Ore. — A powerful explosion early Friday morning sent shockwaves through northeast Bend, damaging multiple buildings and startling residents miles away. The blast, which occurred at 5:23 a.m., was traced back to a shipping container outside Kercher Electric on NE Yale Avenue.

Bend fire investigators revealed that a leaking oxygen-acetylene welding setup inside the container combined with a plugged-in upright freezer created a highly flammable environment. Deputy Fire Marshal Cindy Kettering explained, “The welding setup leaked, filling the closed container with a dangerous mixture of gases. The energized freezer provided the ignition source, leading to the explosion.”

The force of the blast was significant, with debris from the shipping container—now twisted and mangled—scattered over 50 feet into neighboring properties. Six buildings, including Kercher Electric and Arbor Builders, were marked as “Do Not Occupy” by the City of Bend Building Department due to extensive structural damage. Fortunately, no one was inside at the time of the explosion.

Witnesses described the event as jarring. Dennis O’Shea, a nearby resident, likened the sound to a close lightning strike, saying it knocked items off his shelves. “I rushed outside to see what happened, but I couldn’t find the source,” he recounted.

The impact was felt far beyond the immediate vicinity. Umbra Tattoo Studio, located half a mile away, captured the explosion on its surveillance camera, showing the shaking of the interior and the sound of the blast. “We thought it was an earthquake at first,” said a staff member.

Social media lit up with reports from residents as far away as Three Rivers, all sharing their experiences of the sudden boom. “It was surreal,” one hiker on Pilot Butte remarked, noting that even from the vantage point of the hill, the explosion was unmistakable.

In the aftermath, Kercher Electric’s service trucks were severely damaged, with one truck’s cab completely blown out. Nearby businesses, including Electric Light Barbershop, also reported shattered windows and damaged property.

As investigations continue, the community remains on high alert, reflecting on the morning’s chaos and the fortunate absence of injuries. Fire officials are urging residents to remain vigilant about safety practices, especially when dealing with flammable materials.
