First budget vote sees D.C. Council raising taxes and reversing some cuts

D.C. Council Approves $21 Billion Fiscal 2025 Budget with Tax Hikes and Program Changes

The D.C. Council approved a $21 billion fiscal 2025 budget with tax hikes to offset proposed program cuts by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser. The budget aims to protect low-income residents and fund high-demand programs. Changes include increased property taxes on expensive homes, additional business taxes for Paid Family Leave, and reallocating funds to schools. The council also approved housing vouchers and emergency rental assistance. Despite opposition from Bowser, the council enhanced tax credits and sports gambling programs. Further amendments are expected as lawmakers address remaining priorities and concerns. Council member Trayon White Sr. was the lone dissenting vote, citing inadequate funding for violence programs and underserved areas. The budget will undergo further revisions before the final vote next month.
