Thunderstorm Causes Roof to Fly Off Galax Business, No Injuries Reported

Galax, VA – September 5, 2023 – A powerful thunderstorm swept through Galax on Tuesday, leaving a trail of damage in its wake, including the roof of a local business that was ripped off during the storm. The incident occurred at MGW Networks LLC on East Stuart Drive, which houses Lingo Networks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Witnesses described the storm as sudden and intense. John Lael, who was driving past the building when the roof was blown off, recounted the harrowing moment. “The rain was coming down hard and winds were high,” he said. “I could feel the wind rushing past my vehicle at high speed. It exploded like a bomb, and debris went everywhere. I was shocked it didn’t hit my car.”

Meteorologist Denis Sleighter from the National Weather Service in Blacksburg explained that the storm featured “straight-line winds,” a phenomenon similar to a derecho but on a smaller scale. “This type of wind damage is not uncommon during thunderstorms,” he noted.

Chase Smith, director of marketing for MGW, confirmed that a technician was inside the building at the time of the incident but was unharmed. “The roof collapsed and landed on his work vehicle, causing significant damage, but thankfully everyone is safe,” he said. Smith added that the company is currently consulting with engineers to assess any structural damage and plan for a new roof.

Despite the chaos, Smith expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “We’re thankful for the outreach from the public and offers of assistance from local organizations,” he said.

Nearby, a house on Glendale Road experienced a small roof fire after branches struck a power line, causing a surge. Ricky Walker of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department reported that no one was home at the time, and Appalachian Power quickly addressed the downed line.

While the storm caused notable damage in Galax, other areas in the Twin Counties reported relatively minor incidents. Phillip Adams from Grayson County Emergency Services mentioned that an RV was struck by a falling tree limb, but no serious injuries were reported.

As the community begins to recover from the storm, residents are reminded of the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the importance of preparedness.
