North Texas Congress Members Raise Alarm Over Flight Reductions Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown
DALLAS, TX — As the government shutdown stretches into its 40th day, members of Congress from North Texas are sounding the alarm over significant reductions in flight capacity at Dallas Love Field and DFW International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented a 10% cut in flights at 40 high-traffic airports nationwide, including both major airports in the Dallas area, leading to over 1,000 flight cancellations on Friday alone.
The shutdown, now a record-setting duration, has left many air traffic controllers unable to report to work due to unpaid wages, exacerbating the crisis in air travel. The House passed a clean continuing resolution in September, but the Senate has yet to follow suit, with negotiations ongoing and no resolution in sight.
Democratic Congresswoman Julie Johnson of Farmers Branch expressed her frustration, stating, “That’s very serious. Our country needs a robust transportation system for both personal and business travel. I hope Republicans are listening. They are in charge, and it’s on them to lead.”
Republican Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne of Irving echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the impact on local businesses and constituents. “To think that we don’t have the ability to get where we need to go is a horrendous burden. This didn’t have to happen. I urge our Democrat colleagues to stop playing games and get back to work.”
The ongoing flight reductions come as the government grapples with broader implications of the shutdown. In a related development, a U.S. District Judge ordered the USDA to provide full food benefits through November for approximately 42 million Americans relying on the SNAP program. However, the Justice Department has appealed this ruling, leading to further uncertainty for those dependent on federal assistance.
As negotiations continue into the weekend, the pressure mounts on lawmakers to find a resolution that will restore normalcy to air travel and support essential services for millions of Americans.
