Port Alberni Takes Center Stage in Upcoming Film Production
Port Alberni Shines as Filming Location for Upcoming Movie
Port Alberni, BC – The picturesque landscapes and vibrant community of Port Alberni are set to take center stage in an upcoming film, with several local landmarks, including Smitty’s restaurant and the historic McLean Mill, serving as backdrops for the production.
Smitty’s owner, Katinna Savard, expressed her excitement about hosting the film crew, describing the experience as “fantastic.” Having owned the restaurant for nine years and worked there for 36, Savard found it surreal to see professionals at work in her establishment. “Watching the crew manage everything from electrical setups to camera work was incredible,” she said. “Seeing one of the actors pacing in our dish pit, rehearsing her lines, was a moment I won’t forget.”
The bustling restaurant transformed into a film set, with tables moved aside and equipment filling the dining area. Savard noted that at least 20 crew members worked diligently on laptops while filming took place in another section. Outside, the parking lot was filled with trucks, generators, and food vendors, creating a lively atmosphere.
In preparation for the shoot, the crew covered Smitty’s signage, prompting curious customers to wonder if the restaurant had changed ownership. Savard reassured them that Smitty’s was not closing its doors. “We’re just happy to help them make it work,” she said, adding that the crew took great care to restore everything to its original state after filming.
Three of Smitty’s staff, including Savard’s niece, participated in the shoot, adding a personal touch to the experience. “Seeing her dressed up for her role reminded me of my early days here,” Savard reflected proudly.
The film shoot’s schedule shifted from Wednesday to Thursday, a change that ultimately benefited the restaurant, as Wednesdays are typically busy. “We’re excited to see the movie and recognize so many familiar sights from our town,” Savard said.
The economic impact of the film crew’s presence is significant. Elliot Drew, director of operations for the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce, highlighted that the production is expected to inject around half a million dollars into the local economy over three weeks. “From food and services to hotel stays and equipment rentals, the benefits are substantial,” he noted.
Filming at the McLean Mill, operated by the chamber, has continued with minimal disruption. Drew emphasized that the historic site remains recognizable, ensuring that viewers will appreciate its charm in the film. “More eyes on our community can only help us,” he said, underscoring the importance of fostering such opportunities.
Savard shared that many crew members have expressed interest in relocating to Vancouver Island, with one specifically considering a move to Port Alberni. “It’s wonderful to see how much they enjoy our community,” she said.
As filming continues, both Savard and Drew are optimistic about the lasting benefits this project will bring to Port Alberni, from economic boosts to increased visibility. “If we can show that Port Alberni is a great place to film, word will spread, and more productions will come,” Drew concluded.
With the film set to showcase the beauty and character of Port Alberni, locals eagerly await its release, ready to spot their favorite spots on the big screen.
