Bernie Sanders Criticizes 8 Democrats for Aligning with GOP on Continuing Resolution

Sen. Bernie Sanders Criticizes Democrats for Supporting Continuing Resolution

Sanders Slams Senate Democrats for Supporting Controversial Continuing Resolution

Washington, D.C. — In a fiery response to a recent procedural vote, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has publicly condemned eight Senate Democrats who sided with Republicans to advance a continuing resolution aimed at temporarily funding the federal government. The vote, which took place on Sunday, has sparked significant backlash from progressive lawmakers and advocates concerned about its implications for healthcare and social services.

In a video shared on his X account, Sanders labeled the decision as “a very, very bad vote,” emphasizing the potential consequences for millions of Americans. “Tonight, 8 Democrats voted with the Republicans to allow them to go forward on this continuing resolution,” he stated, expressing his disappointment in the party’s direction.

The continuing resolution, originally intended to prevent a government shutdown, has been criticized by Sanders for containing provisions that could lead to increased healthcare premiums and cuts to Medicaid. He warned that the measure could double or even triple healthcare costs for over 20 million Americans, stating, “People can’t afford that when we are already paying the highest prices in the world for healthcare.”

Sanders further argued that the resolution could result in 15 million individuals being removed from Medicaid, a move he claims could lead to approximately 50,000 unnecessary deaths each year. “All of that was done to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1%,” he asserted, framing the vote as a betrayal of working-class interests.

The senator’s comments come on the heels of recent elections, where he believes voters expressed a desire for lawmakers to resist what he terms “Trumpism” and its impact on the working class. “What the election showed is that the American people wanted us to stand up to Trumpism — to his war against working-class people, to his authoritarianism,” Sanders said.

The implications of the continuing resolution extend beyond immediate funding concerns. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), allowing enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire could significantly raise out-of-pocket costs for millions of Americans. Sanders highlighted that the resolution’s passage could undermine healthcare protections at a time when many are still grappling with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his video, Sanders called for a renewed commitment to protecting working-class Americans and ensuring that the U.S. joins other major countries in guaranteeing healthcare for all. “We have a lot of work to do, but to be honest with you, tonight was not a good night,” he concluded.

As the debate continues, the fallout from this vote may reshape the landscape for healthcare policy and funding in the coming months, with Sanders and his allies poised to challenge any measures they perceive as detrimental to the American public.
