Empowering Entrepreneurs: Launch of the “Business Bootcamp” Series in Weirton

Entrepreneurs Gather for Business Bootcamp in Weirton

WEIRTON — Local entrepreneurs took a significant step toward business success on Thursday, as the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce launched its “Business Bootcamp” series at the Millsop Community Center. This educational initiative aims to empower aspiring business owners with essential knowledge and resources.

The series kicked off with its first session, “Where Do I Start? Licensing Requirements for Weirton and West Virginia,” led by Steve Roberts, a business coach from the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, alongside Mikeal Maguschak, program manager for the City of Weirton’s Business and Rental Registration.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” said Anthony Clements, Executive Director of the Business Development Corporation (BDC), during his welcoming remarks. He highlighted that a staggering 98.8% of businesses in West Virginia fall under the small business category, employing nearly half of the state’s workforce.

Roberts emphasized the importance of understanding the registration process, noting that the state has streamlined this with a one-stop online portal at www.business4wv.com. This resource simplifies the registration process, sending necessary information directly to the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office and the state Tax Department.

The session also shed light on the growing recognition of cottage industries in West Virginia. “If you’re making money from a hobby, it’s likely you need to register as a business,” Roberts advised, encouraging attendees to take advantage of the state’s outreach efforts at local fairs and community events.

Maguschak elaborated on the city’s support for new businesses, revealing that over 2,000 businesses are currently registered in Weirton. He urged potential business owners to consult the Planning and Development Department to navigate the licensing requirements effectively.

The “Business Bootcamp” series will continue through May, featuring a range of topics designed to equip entrepreneurs with the tools they need to thrive. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Oct. 16: “Before You Buy: Zoning Regulations and Owning Versus Leasing”
  • Nov. 20: “Building Your Brand: Strategize Your Marketing and Social Media Presence”
  • Feb. 19: “Show Me The Money: Alternative Financing Options”
  • March 19: “It’s Tax Time: Understanding Your Financial Statement”
  • April 16: “Growing Your Business: Workforce Development”
  • May 21: “Handbooks, Employee Files and More: HR Compliance”

Each session is priced at $10, and pre-registration is required. For more information, interested individuals can contact the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce at (304) 748-7212.

As the “Business Bootcamp” series unfolds, it promises to be a vital resource for local entrepreneurs, fostering a vibrant business community in Weirton and beyond.
