Cottonwood Recreation Center: A Community Hub for Health and Wellness

COTTONWOOD, AZ — For 15 years, the Cottonwood Recreation Center has stood as a beacon of health and wellness in the Verde Valley, attracting hundreds of residents and visitors daily. This state-of-the-art facility, spanning 56,000 square feet, has become a vital part of the community, with an impressive average attendance of 600 to 700 people on weekdays.

“Cottonwood’s decision to build this facility followed years of community input and planning,” said Jak Teel, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Library. “We recognized the need for a year-round, all-weather space for fitness and recreation.” Today, the center is not just a gym; it’s a thriving community hub that offers a wide range of activities for all ages.

The Recreation Center boasts a fitness floor, indoor gymnasium, swimming pool, aerobics studio, climbing wall, event hall, and meeting rooms. Local esthetician Svetlana Bourlaka, who visits five times a week, shared her enthusiasm: “It is a beautiful gym, and I’m able to do both my cardio and my workout with free weights and machines. I’m very pleased with this facility.”

A Comprehensive Fitness Experience

The center is equipped to cater to diverse fitness goals. Recreation Center Manager Julia Root highlighted the extensive offerings: “The free weight area features bench press stations, incline benches, and a full set of dumbbells. The cardio area includes stair steppers, treadmills, and rowing machines, ensuring varied and effective workouts.”

Fitness classes range from Zumba and aquatics to strength training and stress reduction, making it easy for everyone to find something that fits their interests. The 60,000-gallon swimming pool, complete with a lazy river, hot tub, and a thrilling three-story slide, is a favorite among families.

Commitment to Improvement

Teel emphasized the center’s commitment to ongoing improvement: “We’re always working to enhance the facility. Currently, we are replacing all cardio and suspension training equipment and performing essential maintenance in our pool area to ensure its long-term health.”

Community members like Shelby Johnson, a dental hygienist, appreciate the center’s impact on their health. “It’s great for our community and has helped with my overall health. The people here are really nice,” she said.

Accessibility and Community Partnerships

The Recreation Center offers a variety of rates and passes, including discounts for seniors, youth, and military families. “We frequently partner with local schools for swim lessons and after-school programs,” Teel noted. “From the beginning, our goal has been to create a welcoming space where all members of the community can connect, stay healthy, and have fun.”

Visitors from Winnemucca, Nevada, Michael and Diana Padua, were impressed during their vacation. “We found the complex to be very well-managed and clean. Even the locker rooms were immaculate. We were very grateful to have access to such a beautiful facility,” they remarked.

Open for All

The Cottonwood Recreation Center is open Monday through Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call 928-639-3200.

As the center continues to evolve, it remains a cornerstone of health and wellness for the Cottonwood community, embodying the spirit of connection and vitality that defines this vibrant town.
