Heavy Rains Disrupt Diwali Celebrations in Vijayawada, Leaving Traders in Distress
Sudden Downpour Disrupts Diwali Festivities in Vijayawada
Vijayawada — A sudden deluge on Saturday evening wreaked havoc on Diwali celebrations across Vijayawada, leaving traders and shoppers alike in distress. The heavy rains flooded makeshift stalls that were bustling with festive goods, including crackers, lamps, and decorative items, just days before the festival of lights.
Major markets, such as Vajra grounds, Bhavanipuram wholesale market, Kondapalli, Ramavarappadu, and Kanuru, were eerily quiet on Sunday afternoon, as the continuous drizzle kept shoppers at bay. Traditionally, Diwali sees a surge in sales of diyas, decorative items, and fireworks, but this year, many vendors were left grappling with soggy stock and dwindling spirits.
Ravi Raju, a fireworks vendor at Vajra grounds, expressed his frustration: “The rain hit our business badly. We stayed here all night to protect our stock. The wind tore one side of our shed, and we covered the fireworks with tarpaulin to prevent further damage.” His sentiments echoed across the market, where many traders reported significant waterlogging that made it difficult for customers to browse.
The situation is further complicated by warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about potential low-pressure conditions that could bring more rain in the coming days. M. Venkata Subramaniam, a government school teacher, shared his concerns: “We bought only a few crackers for the kids because of the weather. If it rains on Diwali night, they won’t even burn properly.”
As vendors counted their losses, the festive spirit in Vijayawada appeared to be dampened. Many traders spent Sunday reinforcing their stalls with plastic sheets and bamboo supports, hoping for a break in the weather before the peak of the festival on Monday evening.
With uncertainty looming over the skies, the community is left to wonder if the joy of Diwali will be overshadowed by the elements this year.
