Understanding the Right Way to Wash Your Hair: Frequency, Techniques, and Tips

The Hair Washing Dilemma: How Often Should You Shampoo?

JAKARTA – Washing your hair may seem like a straightforward task, but for many, it can be a perplexing routine filled with questions. How often should you shampoo? Is daily washing necessary, or could it be harmful?

For countless individuals, the refreshing feeling of clean hair makes daily washing a habit. However, experts warn that frequent shampooing may not be the best approach. Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetics and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai Hospital, explains, “Just like washing your face, hair washing is essential, but overdoing it can disrupt the natural balance of oils that keep your hair moisturized.”

Over-washing can lead to dry, brittle hair and even skin irritation. Perry Romanowski, a cosmetic chemist and founder of The Beauty Brains, adds that wet hair is more vulnerable, and the act of scrubbing can damage the hair’s cuticle, leading to dullness and breakage. For those with sensitive scalps, frequent washing can trigger rashes and itching.

But washing too infrequently is also problematic. “If you don’t wash your hair enough, oil can build up on your scalp, making hair limp and potentially causing dandruff,” warns Dr. Zeichner.

So, what’s the ideal frequency? Kasey Bertucci, a hairstylist and founder of Salon 120 West in Boston, suggests that it varies based on hair type and lifestyle. For those who prefer washing more often, a gap of two to three days between shampoos is advisable. Curly or coarse hair types, which tend to be drier, may only need washing every five to seven days.

For color-treated hair, Romanowski recommends using sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoos and limiting washes to every two or three days to prevent color fading. Conversely, finer hair may require more frequent washing to avoid limpness, but it’s crucial to choose lightweight shampoos.

Bertucci emphasizes that when washing, focus on the scalp rather than the ends of the hair, as the foam will cleanse the lengths during rinsing. A small amount of shampoo—about the size of a raspberry—is sufficient for one wash.

As for switching shampoos, Romanowski reassures that hair does not become “immune” to a product over time, so there’s no need to frequently change brands. However, he stresses the importance of conditioner, which can significantly improve hair health and manageability.

When applying conditioner, it’s best to avoid the scalp and focus on the lengths of the hair, starting from the ears down. “Too much product on the scalp can lead to limp hair,” Bertucci advises.

In conclusion, while washing hair may seem trivial, understanding the right routine can greatly impact both the appearance and health of your hair. Finding a balance that works for your hair type and lifestyle is key to achieving that fresh, clean feeling without compromising hair health.
