Hurricane Imelda and Humberto: Gulf Coast Storm Team Tracks Dual Threats
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Gulf Coast Storm Team is closely monitoring the movements of Hurricane Imelda and Hurricane Humberto as they churn over the Atlantic Ocean, bringing a mix of concern and caution to coastal residents.
Hurricane Imelda
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Hurricane Imelda is packing maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is making a slow turn to the east, moving away from Florida at 12 mph. Fortunately, this trajectory means that Florida is no longer in the storm’s direct path. The shift to the east is largely influenced by Hurricane Humberto, which is pulling Imelda out to sea.
While Florida may be spared from the brunt of Imelda, the East Coast will still feel its effects, with rip tides and swells expected. As Imelda approaches Bermuda on Wednesday, it is anticipated to strengthen further, prompting a Hurricane Warning for the island. Residents there should prepare for hurricane conditions within the next 36 hours.
Hurricane Humberto
Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto is moving into the open waters of the Atlantic. This storm has weakened significantly over the past 24 hours, now classified as a weak Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 mph. Humberto is currently traveling north-northwest at 17 mph and is expected to turn northeastward within the next day.
As Humberto drifts away from the U.S., the risk of rip currents remains elevated along the East Coast for the next few days. The storm is forecasted to lose its tropical characteristics and transition into an extratropical cyclone by Wednesday.
Current Weather Outlook
Aside from Imelda and Humberto, there are no other areas of tropical weather concern in the Gulf, Caribbean, or Atlantic at this time. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and the Gulf Coast Storm Team is committed to providing the most accurate weather forecasts for Southwest Florida.
