In a vibrant celebration of empowerment and innovation, the 21Ninety Awards have recognized the remarkable contributions of women reshaping the beauty industry. These awards shine a spotlight on entrepreneurs dedicated to uplifting Black women through wellness, lifestyle, and beauty, honoring those whose brilliance often goes unnoticed.
This year’s Beauty Innovator of the Year category featured three exceptional founders who have ventured into uncharted territory, creating products that address the unique needs of Black women. From sustainable hair care to inclusive beauty solutions, these innovators are redefining the industry landscape.
First Place Winner: Rebundle
Leading the charge is Ciara Imani May, founder of Rebundle, the first U.S.-patented braiding hair made from discarded banana stems. In response to alarming findings from a Consumer Reports investigation revealing harmful chemicals in popular synthetic braiding hair, May sought to create a safer alternative.
“I recognized that the materials used in plastic and synthetic hair were harmful to our bodies and the environment,” May explained. “Countless other women and I who suffer from scalp irritation needed an alternative.” Her groundbreaking solution offers stylish, non-toxic bundles that empower Black women to embrace beauty without compromise.
Second Place Winner: MICHE Beauty
In the runner-up position is MICHE Beauty, co-founded by Michelle Ballard and her husband, Jonathan. Since its inception in 2016, MICHE has been a pioneer in plant-based and non-toxic hair care products. Ballard, a content creator who documented her natural hair journey, identified a significant gap in the market and set out to fill it.
With a commitment to inclusivity and quality, MICHE Beauty’s products, such as the Anti-Humidity Firm Hold Hair Gel, are free from harmful ingredients like silicones and sulfates. Their dedication to clean beauty and diverse hair care solutions has made them a beloved brand among consumers.
Third Place Winner: OurX
Ceci Kurzman, the founder of OurX, took home the third-place award, driven by her frustration over the lack of representation in the hair care industry. Kurzman’s brand combines scientific expertise with a focus on personalized care, offering a unique hair assessment quiz that aligns customers with tailored hair care plans.
“OurX aims to completely reinvent hair and scalp wellness for the tightest coils, which are typically the most industry-overlooked,” Kurzman stated. By providing expert guidance and support, OurX is making strides in ensuring that every individual feels seen and valued in their hair care journey.
A Shift in Focus
This year’s 21Ninety Awards marked a significant shift from product-based recognition to honoring the individuals behind the brands. Winners were selected based on their impact, community-building efforts, and dedication to representation. The awards celebrate the changemakers who are not only innovating but also creating spaces for Black women to thrive.
As the beauty industry continues to evolve, the 21Ninety Awards remind us of the importance of recognizing and uplifting the voices of those who are shaping the future. Through their creativity and commitment, these women are not just changing the game—they are redefining what beauty means for generations to come.
